The New Inn, Gloucester, despite its somewhat contradictory
name, counts itself as one of the oldest inns in
England, having been founded by John Twining, a monk
of the adjacent abbey, in 1450-7, for the reception of
pilgrims. Documentary evidence exists for its antiquity,
among other quaint relics being being a record of the proclamations
of the coronations of Queen Elizabeth and Lady
Jane Grey, and also an announcement that William
Shakespeare's dramatic company would perform here.
