In June 1940, inspired by the success of the German Airborne Army, the then Prime Minister, Mr Winston Churchill, called upon the War Office for the formation 'of at least 5,000 Parachute Troops'. During 1942 the maroon beret and the Pegasus arm flash were adopted as the hallmark of the British Airborne Forces. The Regimental Motto 'UTRINQUE PARATUS' meaning 'Ready for Anything' was approved on 3rd June 1951
