"This pass stands about 4 thousand feet above sea level & it is
historical of a great battle fought between the English & the
Singhalese knowing that the English were to pass by this way the
Singhalese half cut hundreds of trees & when they were well under
the trees they levelled one tree down which in turn brought down all the
other trees crushing hundreds of the English - thereby having a very
easy victory - In the background you will see a small station, a train
& a few waggons. As soon as the train leaves this station it runs on
the precarious edge of a rock for six miles or more. The engineer of
this part of the track, a Scotchman, who laid his life for the cause was
buried here. You can see the monument as well."
